We offer an overview of possible trips and excursions, whether you want to carve out single days out of the city or a more complex tour.
Half-day or full-day trips:
1) Colobus park
This is a park maintained by an organization for the protection of Angola's Colobus monkey. The organization protects the species and preserves its reproduction against squatter construction and the large urban traffic in Diani. The Colubus Trust has been conducting community outreach for years now but has also built ingenious aerial walkways that the animals have learned to use. A visit inside the park will be enjoyed by young and old alike.
2) Kaya Diani, Kaya Ukunda, Kaya Kinondo.
The term Kaya means Sacred Forest. Each of the 9 Mijikenda tribes, the main population of the coastal hinterland, has a traditional Kaya, a fortified village in the forest whose size varies from 3 kilometers to 5 hectares. Although the Kaya have long experienced degradation and neglect, thanks to their election as "UNESCO World Heritage Sites" in 2008, 20 of them are now under protection and maintenance. A visit accompanied by a guide who can explain their history and sacredness is recommended.
